Creating choreography

A few months have passed since Andromeda agreed to choreograph Schumann's Fantasiestücke op.12, and the creative process is in full flow.

I must admit, having never seen the creation of choreography before I had no idea what to expect.

I started by playing the piece to her live, a couple of times, whilst she listened intently and wrote some notes. Very quickly she decided on the number of dancers, the overall structure and created a story as a backbone for the choreography.

Then, for weeks, she listened to recordings of the piece obsessively, until she knew every part and every note intimately. This enabled her to refine the story and feel certain patterns and movements she would use.

Thanks to the generosity of some of Andromeda's friends, we have found a perfect environment to develop the piece. We needed a room with sufficient space, a decent piano and a dance-friendly floor. Now that we have it, we can make this project a reality.

The process is simple: I play, and Andromeda moves, taking in turn the roles of the three dancers, two male and one female, who will perform. She does not make the precise movements but embodies the flow, the positions on the stage, and the stylistic feel. Even in this raw state, I think it is a wonderful experience.

Seeing this project come to light is an absolute privilege and I can't wait to witness what comes next.
